3.0 3.0 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

Most other certification books seek Microsoft approval, meaning they must include at least 50% tutorial material, and cover every objective for every exam, no matter how frivolous or relevant to the actual exam. MCSE Fast Tracks break away from that mold by focusing only on what you really need to know. Targeted to those who know the technology but who don't yet have the certification, MCSE Fast Track: Visual Basic 6, Exam 70-176 features only what the more-experienced candidate needs to know to pass the exams. Each book in the Fast Track series has two parts. Part One contains all the information you need to know about the exam. It uses an easy-to-follow approach to drills you on exam-critical information. Part Two features classroom-tested, instructor-proven review strategies, including Fast Fasts, Hotlists of Exam-Critical Concepts, Sample Test Questions, and the Insider's Spin. MCSE Fast Tracks are your accelerated path to MCSE success.

Being an MCT and doing visual basic programming for six years, I was really disappointed in this book. The questions did not relate to the test very well, and it appeared to me that most of the questions were from the old vb5 test. This book should concentrate on test points more than an explaination of visual basic. People buy these books to brush up on test questions not learn vb. If you want a test aid skip this book and hit the transender tests.

I'm not an expert at VB, but I have good experience and this book was useful but not enough to get me through the test. Use this book only as a guide as to what to study in detail if you want to pass.

I just pass the 70-176 exam and this book was the last thing that I read. It helped me enter the atmosfere of the exam but I didn't find any of the questions from the book in the real test. The book is very concise and cover more than the Mastering VB6 from Microsoft. It is not a book for learning becouse it contains almost only questions (and answers).

To give you some background, I've been developing in VB for 2 years professionally, though primarily in earlier versions (VB 4, mostly). Recently, I started working with VB6. Three days ago, I passed my test getting a score of 714 (where 714 was the minimum score to pass). Keep in mind, I could have studied harder than I did.
This book is a sound review, and was even helpful in making me more familiar with some of the new features of VB 6. Its condensed format makes it excellent for reviewing concepts without laboring for weeks through a larger work. However, I augmented studying with this book with VB6 Unleashed - especially chapters 4 - 9 on creating ActiveX controls.
Bottom line: This book is good, but you'll need other resources - as you would with ANY study material like this. I recommend VB6 Unleashed strongly, as it details new controls, ActiveX control creation, and a broad survey of topics that will flesh out what this book covers in broad overviews.
And if you're trying to pass the exam without having actually USED the product - forget it. I developed in VB6 before the exam, but not extensively. The questions that hurt me the most were those you couldn't get easily from a book. The Package and Deployment Wizard questions hammered me the most. Why? I hadn't explored all the features of the Package and Deployment Wizard.

As the authors say, this is a book designed for experienced VB users. Works extremely well at categorizing topics in alignment with the exam's. <RANT>Newbys who try to use this or any other book to obtain the knowledge required to become certified as professionals are neither professional nor realistic in their expectations.</RANT> I had pre-ordered this book back in April and, upon delivery, registered for the exam. Read the book (not scanned, but READ) from cover to cover the weekend before and felt extremely comfortable on exam day. And passed. The areas stressed in the summary sections are the ones stressed in the exam.

Don't rely on this book to teach you anything new. Do rely on this book to jar loose some ideas, and to clarify some things you hadn't thought of. The use of this book, with two other full fledged books allowed me to pass this exam.

It needs to talk about Package and Deployment, ActiveX Document , and DataEnvironment more. These three category showed repeaptedly in my test and I almost failed the test. After all, I agree with the other review, this is not a teaching VB book, this is a test prep. book. You will have to play every aspect of Vb and read a lot of Vb teaching books because those test questions are very detailed questions.

This book I read just once for an alternate point of view. The information is this book is not bad, but the exam at the end is what I did and I think that it gave me more of an advantage because it showed me what the exam was like. I would recommend going over the file that is issued in the 70-176 module rather than learning from this book though. I would therefore recommend this book for reviewing and getting an alternate point of view and also for the good exam at the end of the book.
